Laneway Presents Yann Tiersen
French composer and multi-instrumentalist, Yann Tiersen, today announces his return to Australia in January 2017. Tiersen will take in Melbourne’s Hamer Hall for a special solo performance on Wednesday 25th January, in addition to a Sydney Opera House Concert Hall appearance on Tuesday 24th January as part of Sydney Festival.
Yann Tiersen plays a collection of solo piano and violin works taking the audience on a journey of his island home of Ushant home in Brittany, before taking them on a tour of his earlier works on piano, toy piano and violin.
Yann Tiersen first came to prominence when his early albums were used to create the whimsical Bafta-winning soundtrack for Amélie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001). Since then, he has released a further six studio albums, composed multiple soundtracks, including Good Bye Lenin! and recorded two live albums.
EUSA is the latest release from Tiersen and his ninth studio album, all of which display his depth, diversity and fearless artistic confidence. Recorded at Abbey Road, EUSA is Tiersen’s first ever album of solo piano music, and follow’s 2014’s Infinity album release.
An album of sparse beauty, the collection of ten solo piano pieces form a musical map of Tiersen’s home island of Ushant (‘Eusa’ in the local Breton language); each of the ten pieces was created in and named after a specific location on the island. Tiersen’s pure, stripped-back approach allows listeners to become immersed in the raw, natural beauty of Eusa and the desolate, sparsely inhabited landscapes.
“EUSA is luminous, a grand gesture made up of the kind of small, gorgeous moments that will remind listeners of home - wherever that may be.”– Exclaim!
“The Amélie soundtrack composer and multi-instrumentalist writes music that seems simple but tugs on the heartstrings.”– The Guardian
On his recent tour dates, Tiersen sold out back-to-back performances at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival, along with two Barbican dates, and continues to take in esteemed venues across Europe through October and November, from the Philharmonie de Paris to Russia’s Grand Hall of the Philharmonia.
The Independent has described his live performance as "innovative, constantly shifting and seeking to build on that landscape he evokes with each note." (4* live review) and The Guardian described Tiersen’s "...devastatingly effective way with a melody, playing tunes... that don’t sound as if they were composed, more that they had always existed and have only just been unearthed.”(4* live review).
The compositions of Yann Tiersen will take audiences on a musical journey to a land far, far away. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of music’s most enchanting performers live in January.
